01 / THE BASICS
How a round works
Private and shared cards
In Texas Hold'em each player receives two private cards. The table reveals up to five shared community cards.
Three reveal stages
The flop reveals three community cards, then the turn adds one and the river adds the last one.
Hand ranking
The best five-card combination wins the hand at showdown. Learn the ranking chart from high card through straight flush.
Betting round vocabulary
Check, call, bet, raise and fold describe actions available under the game rules. This guide defines words, not which action to choose.
